This is a commemorative One Pound Coin which was issued on the 50th anniversary of founding of the United Nations. The coin was struck in the Royal Mint along with a series of similar coins for other countries. The size was chosen to be consistent with the other coins in the series rather than to reflect the size of the Irish circulating pound coin. This coin was only struck in silver proofs. No base metal examples or circulating examples of the design were struck. The example above is in proof FDC (Fleur de Coin). As this coin was only struck in this grade the only examples available will be either in this condition or examples which have been mishandled rather than circulated. The mintage was quite small (as yet no confirmed figure is available, but a figure of 2,750 coins seems to be a good working estimate. Of these it is probable that 750 were sent to the Central Bank in Dublin and sold over the counter in the then headquarters in Dame St. - the remaining 2,000 were allocated to the collectors who had signed up to the Royal Mint UN series and were still subscribing, this coin was very late in the series (late 1997 or early 1998) so many subscribers had stopped collecting the series - there was a small surplus left from this allocation of 2,000 coins which were probably sold into the numismatic trade, but in different boxes from the initial batch sent to Dublin, and I suspect some were supplied without certificates). This is certainly the lowest mintage for any official 20th century Irish coin, but obviously the survival rate is much higher than many other 20th century Irish coins. Some of the 21st century Euro issues, particularly the gold coins have even lower mintages than this estimate. The coin was issued in a blue Royal Mint presentation case with an unnumbered certificate which has silver-coloured metallic printing.
